Changes could be on the card in the largest electoral area

The Belmullet area saw the largest influx of new voters into the area following the redrawing of the boundaries last year. An extra 2,249 people were planted into the area from both the east and south of the old constituency. The decision to move Newport east from the Westport electoral area into Belmullet and its population of 1,021 was enough to see sitting Newport based Fianna Fáil councilor Frank Chambers decide not to run again, after seeing his home base split between two different electoral areas. While to the east of the old constituency, Ballycastle, Bunaveela, Kilfian west and Lacken north have been added from the old Ballina area.

National student awards for Mayo students

William Doherty, a 17-year-old student at Our Lady’s Secondary School, Belmullet, was named Senior Student of the Year 2009 for Entrepreneurial Spirit at the Bank of Ireland National Student Awards. Mayo celebrations heightened when footballer Shane Nally from St Colman’s College, Claremorris, was also called to the stage to accept the title of Senior Sport Student of the Year 2009.

Ballina man had speed detector on dash of his van

A man who was coming from the gym and was stopped by gardaí led to the Ballina man appearing before Belmullet District Court this week after a speed detector was observed lying on the dashboard.

Holmes criticises delay in Belmullet Sewerage Scheme

Councillor Michael Holmes has strongly criticised the Minister for Agriculture for holding up work on the Belmullet Sewerage Scheme, and accused him of using delay tactics in order to avoid paying out. According to regulations, a foreshore licence must be obtained from the Department of Agriculture before work can commence on the project. However, Holmes stated that they are still awaiting the issue of this licence despite having applied for it almost a year and a half ago.

Car boot sale

A car boot sale in aid of the annual Belmullet Festival will take place on Sunday July 5 at Aras Inis Gluaire beginning at 12 noon and continuing until 3pm.

Corrib protesters gear up for summer of unrest

Tensions in north Mayo have escalated once again with eight arrests over the weekend and one on Tuesday when a large number of protesters gathered for the summer Rossport Peace Camp. With the Solitaire due to arrive back in Mayo waters in the next month, the Rossport Solidarity Camp has taken up residence in Glengad in a bid to build up the resistance to Shell over the coming weeks and months. Mary Sweeney of the Rossport Solidarity Camp said: “Resistance in Mayo is building again. We’re expecting many waterborne activists from across Europe to arrive over the following weeks. The Solitaire will leave Irish waters once again with no pipeline laid.”

Writers’ weekend

Mayo County Council Arts Office is in the midst of its preparations for the 2009 Force 12 Writers’ Weekend which is taking place this year from Friday June 12 to Sunday June 14 in Belmullet.

Erris summer camps

Irish camps, for children aged six to 12 years will take place in Ceathrú Thaidhg (July 6 to 10); Ros Dumhach (July 13 to July 17); Inbhear (July 20 to July 24t); Gleann an Chaisil (July 20 to July 24); Barr na Trá (July 27 to July 31) and Eachléim (August 4 to August 8).
