Frankie Gavin is to headline a major concert of Irish traditional music this weekend at The World Fleadh festival. It’s all part of what’s been a momentous 12 months for the fiddle great, from playing for George W Bush to hanging out with Keith Richards.

Ireland’s top traditional, folk and Celtic music industry stars will be recognised and awarded for their contribution to the industry at Ireland’s Music Awards which will take place in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar this summer on Saturday August 1.

OVER THE past three years Headford’s Eric Cunningham has been staging concerts and performances showcasing the best of Irish trad and Celtic music through his World Fleadh festivals.

Headford’s musical family, the Cunninghams, will being their Home For Christmas charity show to Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover, tomorrow at 9pm.

For many years traditional super group De Dannan were the forerunners in the Irish traditional music world but after 33 years, 14 albums and a number of changes in the line up, the group disbanded in 2003. This July, original founding member and world famous fiddle player Frankie Gavin will unleash a new De Dannan which in his own words "will reflect a De Dannan of the 21st century”.

Castlebar is ready to rock this weekend with the arrival of the World Fleadh, the first time this Irish and Celtic music festival will be staged in the west of Ireland. Bucking all recessionary trends, music enthusiasts are expected to descend on Castlebar in their thousands for nine full days of world-class musical entertainment with the best of what Ireland has to offer on display.

FRANKIE GAVIN will lead The New De Dannan in what is sure to prove a wonderful night of superb Irish trad, in the Town Hall Theatre Galway on Monday October 5.

Traditional music fans will have been more than happy to hear that a new 21st century De Dannan has been regrouped with founding member Frankie Gavin at the helm.

After wowing fans back in August, Frankie Gavin and The New De Dannan return to Castlebar on Wednesday, December 30, for a special post Christmas show.
