Dermot Hyland is currently employed at the Kinlay Hostel in Eyre Square, Galway. Dermot has availed of the Supported Employment Programme through EmployAbility Galway. Dermot was referred to EmployAbility Galway service in February 2011. Dermot, originally from Renvyle Co Galway, moved to Galway city in 198. Dermot has a mild learning disability and left secondary school after his third year to attend work preparation training. As part of his training he completed a work experience in the Value Centre, Newcastle in 1993, which resulted in paid employment. Dermot loved his job there and worked as a general operative until March 2009 when the facility in Newcastle closed and he was made redundant.

The Irish Association for Supported Employment (IASE) has called for businesses in Mayo to participate in the sixth annual National Supported Employment Week (22 to 28 April). Job Shadow Day (24 April) is the highlight of the week and will see hundreds of people with disabilities shadow a workplace mentor as he or she goes about a normal working day.

In an effort to increase awareness, the agency that promotes employment for people with disabilities across the region chose the occasion of the release of its 10th annual report in Athlone this week (October 14) to re-brand itself as EmployAbility Midlands.

A local support agency organised a job shadow day last week (April 22) in Athlone, with widespread participation across the Midlands.

Minister for Labour Affairs Dara Calleary TD welcomed the range of initiatives proposed by the European Commission to maintain and create jobs, to upgrade skills, and to increase access to employment.

Preliminary figures from the annual first destination survey of NUI Galway's 2008 Graduates' Survey indicates that nearly 91 per cent of the University's graduates entered employment or further study on completion of their degree. The data contained in the preliminary report is an annual survey of almost 4,000 graduates on NUI Galway full-time programmes. The survey is conducted nine months after graduation and gives an invaluable insight into employment opportunities and further study trends.
