Castlebar now has a unique event of its own, its called the Days Adventure Duathlon and it will be held on Saturday March 27 with a start time of 9am. This race is a mix of running, cycling and mountain running, very much like the famous Gael force event which has proven to be a big hit in the Leenane / Westport area, Now Castlebar can boast about an event of its own with equally as stunning and challenging a terrain.

The Days Adventure Duathlon will take place on March 27 and is a mixture of running and cycling over a hilly course over a distance of 36k.

Carlow’s great hope is firmly attached to the handlebars of two locals setting out for world title glory. Cyclists Keith Heary and Louise Nolan are heading to Italy on September 27 and 28 to compete in the World Duathlon championships. The event, a two-discipline event with a 10km run, 40km cycle, and then a 5km run, takes place in Rimini, Italy. “Myself and Louise got selected to represent Ireland by taking part in a series of selection races over the course of the year,” Keith told Carlow First. “I qualified by finishing second overall in the Limerick Duathlon series of three races (winning one race), and also won the Waterford Duathlon, which were qualifying events. Louise qualified by finishing fourth overall in the Limerick Duathlon series and winning the Carrick-on-Suir Duathlon,” he said. Graiguecullen native Keith and Carlow native Louise are well known locally and are inundated with well wishes as they prepare for the trip.

Adventure races are fast growing in Ireland. The west of Ireland has been leading the way with major events in the last few years using the fantastic rugged scenery of County Mayo. A new annual adventure race will be held on March 27 2010 which fits perfectly with any athletes who run, cycle, and train for adventure races around the country. The ever popular Westport 5K which fell foul to the weather has been refixed for Sunday, February 7. The event which takes in the final round of the 2009 Mayo Athletic Club, Vodafone, C and C Cellular road race league will get under way at 2pm in the west Mayo town. The race will be held over a flat accurate course on the streets of the town. Entries for the race will be taken in the dressing rooms at the sports centre beside Westport Athletic Club’s track from 12.30pm on the day of the event. There will be refreshments served at Hotel Westport where the race finishes and the prize giving will take place there also from 3.30pm. There will be prizes in the men’s category for the first three finishers overall, first three over 40s, first three over 50s, and the first junior u19. In the women’s section of the road race league there will also be a prize for the first three overall finishers, first three over 35s, first three over 45s, and first junior. There will also be a prize for the best team from the four Mayo Fit4Life group on the race. Entry for the event costs €15, and there will also be a presentation of the Irish Runner most improved athlete award for 2009.
