MSP launches spring 2013 training and events programme

Child protection in sport, sports first aid, walking and cycling leader training, sports leadership training, funding workshops and Lucozade sport education courses are just some of the upcoming sports volunteer training courses which will be available through the Mayo Sports Partnership over the coming months. These courses/seminars are aimed at community/sport volunteers, coaches, or indeed anyone who may have an interest in sport/physical activity. Duathlon fever hits Castlebar tomorrow

Tomorrow, Saturday March 24, will see some 300 participants take part in the third annual Harlequin Adventure Duathlon. This is a mix of running and cycling over a hilly course. There is a slight change in the course this year with no off road section, reducing the course to 34.5km instead of the 38km of last year. For those who are taking part a standard racer will do perfectly for the bike sections and your normal runners will do for all of the running sections.

Kilkenny Triathlon Club launches inaugural race

Kilkenny Triathlon Club announced the launch of its inaugural club race last week – ‘the KTC Duathlon 2012’ – which will take place in the scenic surrounds of Mount Juliet, Kilkenny on Saturday, March 10.

Gold for Aaron Murtagh at National Indoor Championships

Aaron Murtagh, Ballina Athletic Club, won a gold medal in the junior triple jump at the National Junior championships in Nenagh at the weekend. Good performances were also recorded by Hugh Armstrong in the 1,500m and Simon Gillespie in the 3,000m walk. Hugh Armstrong will be eligible to compete in this competition again next year. Simon Gillespie recorded a PB in the 3000m walk and is eligible to compete at this level for the next three years.

Golds for Ballina AC and Mayo AC at national masters indoor championships

Last Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Masters Indoor Championships, Mayo AC came home with number of medals split between two athletes. In the female over 45 section, Ann Murray won a gold medal in the 3,000 metres and a bronze in the 400 metres. In the men’s over 55 section, Patrick Moran won the gold in the high jump event and took a bronze in the long jump.
