Achill half marathon takes centre stage

Next weekend all roads lead to Achill for the fifth annual Achill half marathon on Saturday July 3. If it is entertainment you are after then you will not be disappointed with events being organised in the various hostelries for the marathon weekend. The race begins at 11am with the athletes being sent off along the course to the strains of the traditional Achill sound of the Dooagh Pipeband. To accommodate the 2,000 participants, registration will open at the marquee in Keel on Friday afternoon at 2pm and close at 11pm, and will open again on Saturday from 7.30am until 10am.

Raffle in Achill

At the recent monthly meeting of Achill YFG, it was decided to hold a fundraising raffle which will take place on July 3 in The Pub (Lourdie's), Dooagh at 9.30pm.

Achill school to take part in world record attempt

A world record attempt by Scoil Acla, the longest-established summer school in Ireland, will take place on Achill's 5km-long Keel Strand on July 31 as part of Scoil Acla's 1910 to 2010 centenary celebrations, bringing together the most tin whistle players ever in one place to play the same tune.

Scoil Acla classes commence on July 28 in creative writing, and traditional music song and dance. The official opening by poet John F Deane takes place on Monday evening July 28 in Gielty's, Dooagh with registration for all classes and activities taking place that morning at 9am.

The Achill Heinrich Böll cottage on Achill Island is a residency for writers, composers and artists. Applications are now being accepted for stays in the cottage during 2010.

Ballyheane Race Night

A race night will be held in the Punchbowl, Ballyheane, on Saturday March 28 at 9pm. Proceeds are in aid of the Ballyheane Buttercups community crèche.
