Westmeath’s eight point defeat away to Louth last weekend in the opening round of the National League has turned up the heat as they prepare to welcome Cavan to Cusack Park on Sunday. Hopes were high ahead of the trip to Louth that, even allowing for the difficult nature of the opening encounter, the losing run could be arrested. If we are to retain any hope of promotion a win on Sunday is a must.

There’s probably enough of talk of doom and gloom around without me adding to it here. But sure at this stage we wouldn’t know how to cope if we heard a bit of good news anyway, would we? With that in mind I thought I’d share with you something that has been troubling me over the festive period.

Last weekend’s action on the playing fields means that the football championships on either side of the Shannon have reached the quarter-final stages. While a lot of football has yet to be played before any silverware is handed out, things have become a lot clearer, now that we have reached the knock-out stage.

With the Westmeath senior club championship now having reached the knockout stages we are in for some serious action this weekend. Garrycastle and Corralstown/Kinnegad are both already safely through to the semi-finals. Their opposition in the semis will be decided over the course of this weekend. Maryland face a challenging outing against Tyrrellspass in Lakepoint Park on Saturday at 7.15pm while Mullingar Shamrocks and St Loman’s go head to head in a must-see tie in Cusack Park on Sunday at 6.15pm.

Over the past two decades Galway minor hurling teams have enjoyed several bountiful Sunday afternoons in September, and Mattie Murphy’s current crop of youngsters will be anxious to add another to the collection this weekend.

After the bitter frustration and disappointment of last year’s defeat in the All Ireland final to Kilkenny, Mattie Murphy and his minor charges head up the road again to Croke Park hoping to collect the 2009 title and gain some measure of revenge for that sickening loss.

With all the preliminaries out of the way we have reached the semi-final stage of the senior and intermediate championships in Westmeath. The first senior semi-final, featuring the two heavyweights of recent years, Garrycastle and Tyrrellspass, takes place in Cusack Park this Sunday at 3pm. This intriguing contest will be followed by the replayed quarter-final between Mullingar Shamrocks and St Loman’s at 4.30pm.
