As the dust settles on Election 2016, we have a political landscape unlike any seen since the 1950s. The days of the two and a half party system ended in 2011, but further fragmentation of the political landscape sees seven parties and a large number of Independents occupy the 32nd Dáil.

What happened in Mayo didn’t buck the national trend, but the strength of the two major parties saw them hold on to all the seats in the county. From 1997 on Mayo was reduced to a single constituency as the old Mayo West and Mayo East constituencies were merged, and from 2016 on a large swathe of south Mayo has been subsumed into Galway West. With it in the region of 7,000 votes have gone south of the border and with them sitting Mayo TD John O'Mahony who is looking to take a seat in a battle royale that many observers expect to go on long into Sunday and maybe later before the final shake-out in that particular battle is decided.

A total of 92,315 people are eligible to go to the polls today in Mayo with 200 having already voted on the islands yesterday, where there were 121 eligible voters on Clare Island, 29 qualified voters on Inishbiggle and 50 registered voters on Inishturk. The 92,315 eligible voters in Mayo represents a drop of 8,645 from the 2011 General Election, with the majority of those votes in the south Mayo region now being cast in the Galway West - South Mayo constituency. The number of eligible voters does not include postal voters or special voters. The figures were released by returning officer Fintan Murphy on Wednesday afternoon, and he will be the man who will be running the show in the count centre in Castlebar on Saturday when the boxes are opened at 9am.

The nomination process closed for the upcoming general election yesterday at noon and there are 16 people putting themselves forward looking for your number one vote on Friday, February 26 when you go to the polling station. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny this morning confirmed that the general election will take place on Friday, February 26. The Taoiseach made the announcement this morning in the Dáil before he departed to go to Aras an Uachtarain to ask President Michael D Higgins to dissolve the 31st Dáil. 

Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has slammed the Office of Public Works for failing to maintain rivers in the county. Deputy Calleary said: “Flooding in Mayo is now becoming a regular occurrence. People across the country are talking about the floods of 2009, but the fact of the matter is that it is only three weeks since Crossmolina was under water. People there barely had enough time to clean up their homes and businesses before Storm Desmond hit. On Saturday water levels were so high that it reached the shoulders of the volunteers and workers who were on the ground.
