Muintir Mhaigh Eo Atha Cliath hosted its annual business lunch in the Four Seasons Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, last Friday afternoon, November 14. A key highlight in the social calendar of the association, the lunch brought together Mayo business people from a diverse range of industries including construction, technology, small businesses, hospitality, legal, financial, as well as public sector bodies. The lunch afforded all those gathered an opportunity to mingle, network, and influence in a relaxed setting. A capacity crowd of 460 guests marked the highest attendance for the association’s business lunch and seats were fully sold out two weeks in advance of the event. Dignitaries present on the day include TDs Lucinda Creighton, Dara Calleary, Pat Rabbitte, and Fergus O’Dowd. The current Mayo Person of the Year John Walkin and his wife Colette were also present.

Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary says the Taoiseach must sideline the spin and honour the commitments he made about Ireland West Airport Knock.  Enda Kenny made a promise before the 2011 General Election that he would ‘do whatever he needed for Knock’ if he became Taoiseach. Deputy Calleary commented this week: “The time for talking is long gone and what we need to see from the Taoiseach is action, and a follow through on the commitments he gave to airport officials before he assumed office.  Ireland West Airport Knock needs a cash injection in the upcoming Budget in order to secure its survival and it is up to the Taoiseach and Minister Paschal Donohoe to deliver on pre-election promises. This airport proves its worth on a daily basis.  It employs over 100 people and has seen more than 700,000 passengers pass through its doors this year alone. It brings millions of euro into the local economy and its benefits are felt right across the west and north west. It is a vital part of the tourism infrastructure in the region and its future must be secured.”

Mayo Diaspora weekend sets new records

The Manchester Mayo Diaspora weekend has been hailed as another major success by Mayo County Council, local TDs and councillors after its sell out concert and business event at the Bonniconlon Show. The weekend, which was supported by Failte Ireland and Mayo.ie, attracted a record-breaking 31,000 to north Mayo during Ireland's Bank Holiday weekend.

Thirty thousand expected for famous agricultural show

Up to 30,000 are expected to descend on Bonniconlon, outside Ballina, this Bank Holiday Monday for one of the biggest and most successful agricultural shows in the country.
