High quality water supply for Kilmaine as Lough Mask regional water supply is extended

Kilmaine is to see an improvement in water quality in the area with the announcement this week that the Lough Mask regional water supply scheme is to be extended to the village. This will be funded as part of the Water Services Investment Programme 2010 to 2013 and it will allow for the construction of a water main from Ballinrobe to Kilmaine at a cost of €2.025 million. The funding will be awarded by the Minister for the Environment, Community, and Local Government Phil Hogan to allow Mayo County Council to advance the scheme to construction as soon as possible.

Minor Kilmaine project causes political row

Fianna Fáil councillor Damien Ryan has hit out at being denied an opportunity to contribute funding for improvement works that will be carried out in Kilmaine village. Cllr Ryan raised the issue at the Claremorris Electoral Area Committee meeting this Wednesday when he objected to what he saw as the breaking of “a gentleman’s agreement” on joint funding of the project, he told the Mayo Advertiser yesterday.

Ballinrobe and Ballyhaunis plans given go ahead

Members of Claremorris Area committee have given the go-ahead to the new Ballinrobe and Ballyhaunis local area plans. The new plan has seen no land dezoned, but organised into different phases. The first phase will take in all unfinished estates and existing planning permissions. When 70 per cent of that has been completed, phase two lands will be open for applications.

Mayo County Council turns small revenue surplus on year

Mayo County Council recorded a surplus of €239,866 on its revenue account for 2011 according to its annual financial statement which was adopted at this week’s meeting of the council. The surplus was recorded on a turnover of €147 million last year. County manager Peter Hynes told the meeting: “We’re under significant pressure and it is good to have made a small surplus in a tough year, a lot of organisations would like to be in this position.”
