The popularity of cycling on our roads has grown evident in recent weeks with some of the busiest roads, particularly around the Westport area, become heavily trafficked by cyclists. While this shows a positive move to greener travel and health benefits, the trend does present new dangers and road safety officer with Mayo County Council, Noel Gibbons, has issued an appeal to all cyclists to be responsible and heed the rules of the road. He also advises they wear high-visibility clothing and “always wear a helmet no matter how short the journey is”.

Somthing for everyone as Western Lakes launches summer events

Western Lakes cycling club has three busy months ahead with three big promotions in July, August, and September, catering for leisure, racing, and recreational cyclists. Club chairman John Murphy said: “Our club aims to bring cycling to all facets of the community, by promoting these events we create events that people want to take part in, and bring cycling to their doorsteps, this could not be done without having a great working club where all our members help out.” The three events are the Polkadot challenge, the Ballinrobe two day event, and Cornmarket to Castle fun cycle.

Alternative travel to work

All staff in Mayo local authorities are been encouraged to leave the car at home and make alternative arrangements to travel to work on Monday July 12.

Cycling for all events lined up around the county

This week Western Lakes Cycling Club launched its three main events of the year in Inches Bar, Ballinrobe. Over the past five years these events have grown from strength to strength, and Western Lakes CC hopes that this year will be no different. The three events are the Polkadot leisure cycle challenge which will be held on July 18, the Ballinrobe two day event on August 7 and 8, and the Mayo Sports Partnership cycle to the castle on September 12 which will be part of the Mayo cycle for fun series. Cyclists and students in tandem for Chernobyl children’s charity

West Ireland Cycling, Salerno students, and a number of volunteers have been out in force generously offering all kinds of wonderful services, including tasty smoothies, in the hope of raising up to €5,000 for Galway-based charity the Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal.
