Filming for two different TV shows took place here recently, when Irish-American sisters and TV personalities Catie Keogh and Colleen Kelly – both based in Chicago visited with their crews.

Entries included photos of Smurfs on top of Croagh Patrick (maybe they were actually blue with the cold), amazing scenic shots from the length and breadth of County Mayo and beyond, and some highly unusual photographic compositions.

Large volume of call-outs for Mayo Mountain Rescue Team in past few weeks

The last few weeks have been among the busiest in the history of Mayo Mountain Rescue Team. Team leader Mary Walsh noted that since Reek Sunday, at the end of July, to September 7, the team have responded to 14 call outs. “It is unprecedented in the history of the team that we have had such a concentration of call-outs in the last number of weeks,” she said. Similar sentiments were expressed by deputy team leader Declan Conway, who remarked that in all his years on the team, he had never seen such a demand for its services.

American doctor dies at base of Reek

A gynaecologist in his forties who was based in Chicago died as he began climbing Croagh Patrick on Tuesday. Dr Thomas Connolly, who was accompanied with his wife, Dr Kim Connolly, and a number of others, collapsed and died at the statue of St Patrick as he started his ascent around midday.
