Fine Gael TD for Galway West and Mayo South Seán Kyne has welcomed confirmation that from this month the fire fighters from the new South Connemara fire station will be accompanying colleagues from Clifden and the City on call-outs as part of their final phase of training.

Galway County Council has major plans to mark the anniversary of the Easter Rising next year. A large crowd gathered at County Hall earlier this week for the launch of the local authority’s 1916 centenary programme. Mayo County Council has been working on bringing its housing stock up to standard in relation to insulation and central heating works over the past year and that will continue into 2016. In a report to the elected members of the council, senior executive officer Paul Benson outlined that according to preliminary data of the council's 2,046 housing units, 112 of them had been identified as being deficient in terms of central heating provision and 764 had been identified as having insulation standards lower than being applied by the council under its energy efficiency programme. However it was outlined that most of the houses in the 764 identified as being deficient in terms of insulation complied with building regulations at the time of their construction and that the council apply a very high standard when it comes to insulation and it is for this reason that the glaring deficiency exists.

The swimming of racehorses in the sea at the Weir village in Kilcolgan could soon be ended, as local residents are making representations to the County Council about the safety of the practice.

Local dog rescue charity MADRA has issued a call to Galway City Council to provide them with the wherewithal to reduce Galway city’s unacceptably high dog euthanasia rate. 

Mayo County Council will be spending €6.5 million in repaying loans due next year, it emerged this week. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne questioned the level of spending on loans the council would have to make next year at the October monthly meeting, when the councillors were discussing the Local Government Audit Service Statutory Audit Report for 2014.

Mayo County Council is putting in a serious effort to collect rates owed to it, the head of finance for the council said this week. Cllr Jarlath Munnelly raised the issue of the collection of rates in the county, which was 75 per cent according to Local Government Audit Service Statutory Audit Report for 2014. Cllr Munnelly said that he understood there were plenty of genuine cases where businesses could not pay their rate demands, saying: "There should be more of a increase in the collection of the rates, this is not a case of pursuing money where we cannot get it, but there are plenty of business who went through a tough time and paid their rates and we owe it to them to ensure that those who can pay do."

Mayo County Council's Economic Development and Enterprise Support Strategic Policy Committee threw their weight behind finding a solution to securing the future of Westport House. The committee held a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the future of the attraction after NAMA placed a loan attached to the estate up for sale as part of its Project Arrow portfolio.
