Less than seven weeks from the elections and things are hotting up in the race for Westport Town Council with the announcement of new candidates from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and Labour.

It may have the smallest number of voters of the three town councils in the county, but that makes the Westport Town Council race one of the most interesting.

At the first in a series of Westport Town Council meetings to discuss submissions for the town’s draft development plan Fianna Fáil Councillor Brendan Mulroy commented that the “system is flawed” as elected members, “the voice of the people”, can make decisions about one part of the town but will not have a part to play until the end of the decision making process “in what goes on inside the wall of the Westport House demesne”.

At a four and a half hour meeting on Monday evening in which Westport town councillors continued their discussion on a draft town development plan, a debate on the listing of the Record of Protected Structures, in which an inventory of 150 additional structures were recommended by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, led to heated discussions as regards the inclusion of structures in Westport House and the Westport House Wall.
