Brand Galway has received a significant boost with the news the city has received the Purple Flag award. This prestigious accolade is given to cities and towns which meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing their evening and night-time economy. With the award, Galway has proved itself to be an entertaining, enjoyable, and diverse place to visit after dark as well as during the day.

Galway and Connacht champions Corofin will take the M6 motorway on Saturday morning to Tullamore to take on the Leinster and All-Ireland champions St Vincent’s in the eagerly anticipated All-Ireland football semi-final in O’Connor Park (2pm).

Film Mayo was delighted to have internationally renowned film director Pat O’Connor as its special guest for the launch of Film Mayo, which took place before Christmas. Pat has a very special relationship with Mayo since filming The Ballroom of Romance in Ballycroy in the early eighties. He has very fond memories of his time in Mayo, particularly the warmth of the people in Ballycroy. The reason that Pat agreed to be the special guest at the launch of Film Mayo was because of the affection he holds in his heart for Mayo. During his recent visit Pat talked of how shooting in Mayo was a very special time for him and one of the most fulfilling experiences that he has ever had film-making.

There's a dangerous buzz to everyone over the last few days. You see people in the town, stopping and looking up at the sky and mouthing the words ‘blue’ , ‘bright’ and then moving on again and thinking of doing daft things like sitting outside at cafes and drinking a hot drink just hot enough to warm ya but not too hot to make you look ridiculous — you there sitting outside like a hard, braving this new fresh sensation. Like mammals peering out into the great brightness after the dark of winter, we stagger at first, unsure of what to do with this new found space and light and desire to do something other than that what we have been doing.

In October 2007 he stood on the field in Croke Park after his Mayo ladies’ side had just lost to Cork in the All Ireland final, taking in what went wrong. After guiding Mayo that close to the summit, Frank Browne would have been planning to have another crack at the title the next year, but that was not how things worked out as Mayo entered a number of years of flux with half a dozen managers taking charge over a short number of years. But Browne has come back on board as manager this year after a number of years in the club game, and more recently in charge of the Longford senior hurlers for the last three years where he won a National Hurling League division 3B title and the Lory Meagher Cup last year.

With the one year anniversary of the serious flooding that affected parts of the county, councillors from the West Mayo Municipal District have expressed their disappointment that works still have not been carried out on one of the worst affected areas in Carrowholly. Independent councillor Christy Hyland said at this week’s meeting of the municipal district: “I’ll be very honest, the people feel abandoned by this council and I can’t emphasise it strongly enough. They feel totally abandoned. They were looking out last Friday morning at 7.30am at a 5m tide, I just wonder if there was a big wind what would have happened.”
