A wonderful way to begin the Christmas season. For one night only on Monday December 20, young Irish film makers will present an intimate, dramatic reading of the seasonal classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in the Set Theatre, John Street.

During the first three decades of the 19th century the parish priest of Blarney (north of Cork city) was the affable Fr Mat Horgan. He was the epitome of the traditional scholar-priest. He was a poet and antiquarian, a supporter of Cork university, an advocate for social reform, his hero was Daniel O’Connell, and he spoke Latin and Irish effortlessly. He lived at Ballygibbon (later named Waterloo after a bridge was built there in the month of the famous battle), and built a model of an ancient Round Tower, which can still be seen from the old Limerick to Cork road. But Fr Mat’s great gift was his love and generosity for bringing people of all classes together for dinners, parties and celebrations in a huge barn adjoining his home.

Dreamstuff Youth Theatre will be 10 years old next year and to celebrate they are launching a year-long programme that will all go under the title of ‘Dreamstuff 10’.

Kilkenny Musical Society’s 2010 production, Oliver, opens on Easter Sunday night for a week-long run at the Watergate Theatre. Rehearsals have been underway for over four months and the cast of almost 100 are now putting the final touches to what is sure to be a magnificent production.

This year Westmeath Arts Office is funding an exciting creative writing project for young aspiring writers. This course has been running for three years now with novelist Caroline Barry hosting the workshops in Kilbeggan Library.
