Castlebar Community Development Association presents cheque for €400,000 to Mayo County Council

At a presentation ceremony which took place at the start of the month in Aras an Chontae, Castlebar, the members of the Castlebar Community Development Association presented a cheque for €400,000 to Mayo County Council as the community contribution towards the National Outdoor Pursuits Centre which is being constructed by Mayo County Council at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. The outdoor pursuits centre which includes a state of the art swimming pool is the result of a partnership between Mayo County Council and the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.
Castlebar based company ready to expand workforce as it moves into UK market
Panel Duct, a company which won the top prize at the InterTradeIreland Innovation awards last year is now in the final stages of fitting out a 40,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Castlebar. The company, founded by Pat Walsh, managing director of Panel Duct Ireland, has taken over a premises on the Breaffy Road and has support from Enterprise Ireland to provide 20 immediate jobs with the potential for a five fold growth in the coming three years to 100 jobs.
Childline volunteers wanted in Mayo
ISPCC Castlebar, Mayo, is recruiting Childline volunteers for 2016. ISPCC Childline volunteers are trained to listen and support children and young people via phone, web, and text. It is looking for volunteers who are child-centred and believe in being there to listen to children and young people in a non-judgmental way. Following training volunteers will need to be able to commit to one four-hour shift per week.
Mayo sides book last thirty two spots in FAI Junior Cup

All three Mayo sides in action in the FAI Junior Cup last weekend recorded victories and advanced to the last 32. Manulla made the long trip to Leeside on Saturday evening and they came away with the spoils thanks a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Glen Celtic. Gary Concannon pulled back an equaliser for Tom Healy’s men with a quarter of an hour left on the clock to force extra-time. After a tense and frenetic extra period the dreaded penalty shoot-out was called for. Rory Martyn was denied first but a flawless return from Enda McGahon, Bryan Ralph, Conor Byrne and Connacht Gold Super Cup hero Declan Tonra sealed the win.
Westport push ahead while Conn continue revival

As a result of the torrential rain all weekend a number of games were pulled for the safety of the players. However, those that did go ahead threw up some cracking ties amid the shocking conditions. In the Elverys Sports Super League, Castlebar Celtic had gone into an early lead thanks to a Jordan Loftus goal after only 20 seconds, but with the rain getting heavier and the surface water in Celtic Park causing problems, referee Jimmy Cawley called both sets of players aside and abandoned the game after only nine minutes. Westport Utd were pushed all the way by Iorrais Aontaithe on Saturday night in what can only be described as a thriller. And the star of the show most definitely was Phil Keegan who bagged a hat-trick in a stunning display. Deadlocked at 2-2 at the break the Covies found something extra after the break with Keegan grabbing the late winner. Dave Cameron also got in on the act for Westport, with Ivan Barrett (two) and Kyle O’Reilly on target for Iorrais Aontaithe.

The action in the Mayo League proper will get under way next Saturday evening, April 11, when the four divisions in the league kick off for the 2015 season.

Celtic duo called up for international duty

Two of Castlebar Celtic's young stars have been called up for international duty with Republic of Ireland underage squads this month. Celtic's Rachel Baynes is part of Sharon Boyle’s Republic of Ireland Women’s u16 side will play a friendly game against their Northern Ireland counter-parts at Dundalk’s Oriel Park this evening (Tuesday, January13) at 6.15pm.
