The Irish Heart Foundation will hold a free public talk called ‘Heart Health – What Women Need to Know’ at the Salthill Hotel on Wednesday September 22.

A Women’s Heart Health Awareness Day will take place in Kilkenny from 10am all day on Thursday September 16 to support the Irish Heart Foundation’s “Red Alert – Irish Heart Month”.

The Irish Heart Foundation has urged women to reduce their stroke risk by maintaining a healthy weight, after US research found that stroke rates have tripled among those aged from late thirties to early fifties.

Dr Ann Shortt works as both a GP in Brooklands Medical Centre, Castlebar, and in emergency medicine in Galway. Her area of special interest is preventative medicine.

Work will begin immediately on a €3 million education, research and care centre for heart patients, their families and the general community in the west.

Just under 200 people died from cardiovascular diseases in Westmeath last year according to  Professor Alice Stanton, chair of the Irish Heart Foundation’s Council on Blood Pressure.

The inaugural Safe Heart Awareness Week which is launched by Croí takes place from October 20 to 27. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Ireland and the Irish heart charity is calling on people to know the risk factors that can affect their heart health and to be aware of the steps that can be taken to achieve the recommended target levels.
