Sunday in Castlebar’s McHale Park was a terrific day for St Brigid’s GAA Club from Roscommon, capping a glorious few years when winning their third consecutive Connacht senior title.

The last time a Mayo side claimed the Connacht Club Senior Football Championship it was Ballina Stephenites on a wet and wild day in James Stephens Park in 2007 and St Brigid’s were the opposition. In the past four years the Roscommon men have gone on to claim the last two titles and are looking to make it three in a row and their fourth over all, this Sunday in McHale Park, and in the process, draw Roscommon level on 13 titles each with Mayo in the overall roll of honour. However standing in their way are a Ballaghaderreen side who are looking to claim their first provincial title and Mayo’s 14th drawing them level with Galway on the number of titles won on the roll of honour.

Roscommon senior champions St Brigid’s sent out a clear signal of intent with a clinical performance which saw them brush aside the challenge of Galway champions Salthill/Knocknacarra in Pearse Stadium last Sunday. They are now just one hour away from claiming their third Connacht title on the trot but Ballaghadereen will be no pushovers.

Sometimes teams never really get into the groove and always look likely to be beaten and, unfortunately for Salthill/Knocknacarra, Sunday was one of those occasions.

An attractive and intriguing Connacht club semi-final takes place on Sunday at Pearse Stadium (2.30pm) when Salthill/Knocknacarra take on the current provincial club champions St Brigid’s (Roscommon).

Salthill/Knocknacarra enjoy a 100 per cent history of success in the Connacht club championship and they will put that impressive record on the line in four weeks’ time when they face either Roscommon’s St Brigid's or Leitrim’s Melvin Gaels on Sunday November 11 in the Connacht club semi-final.

Reigning Connacht club champions St Brigid’s will be putting their title on the line when they meet Elphin in the Roscommon semi-final on Sunday in Hyde Park. Elphin are no strangers to the Kiltoom men who have beaten them in the last two county finals. Not surprisingly Kevin McStay’s side are warm favourites to maintain their unbeaten run but Elphin are sure to lay down a strong challenge. The Saints will be without the injured Robbie Kelly and will have to manage without the suspended Frankie Dolan which leaves them somewhat vulnerable.

Reigning champions St Brigid’s got this year’s Roscommon club championship campaign off to a winning start when they easily accounted for a disappointing Kilbride in Kiltoom last Saturday. The final score-line of 3-14 to 0-9 tells its own story and on this evidence the Saints will be hard stopped in their bid to collect another county title this year.
