Victory for Kathy Gleeson in Irishtown 8k

Kathy Gleeson (Claremorris) was the winner of the fourth annual Padraig Cullina Memorial Irishtown 8k. The race was also a Mayo AC 2016 Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League race and the first of five upcoming Club League 8ks/5mile target races or bonus events, with points to be won by competing Mayo AC club members. The course is one lap starting and finishing near the community centre and has some tough stretches, particularly over the final two kilometres.

Magnificent seven for Mayo AC

Mayo AC were represented by a team of 24 (13 women and and 11 men) at the National 10k Championships recently. More than 500 club athletes competed for medals in team and individual age categories. The Mayo AC contingent included five teams - senior women, over 35 men, over 50 men, and two teams of women over 50. It was another great day for the club, continuing their success in national competitions over many years, and in terms of medals won they were the top club in Connacht with seven of their 24 runners winning medals.

Egan and Horan team up for Westport seminar

Olympic silver medallist Kenneth Egan will be one of the sports stars and managers lining out to speak on Achieving Success in Sport – What does it take? a free, public seminar taking place in Westport Town Hall on Wednesday, November 11 starting at 7:30 pm. Kenneth, or Kenny, will be joined by James Horan, former Mayo Senior Football Manager, Valerie Mulcahy, one of the country’s most decorated sportswomen having claimed nine All-Ireland titles with the Cork Ladies Football side and Tom Mohan current manager of the FAI U17 national team. A member of the Connacht Rugby Team is also expected to join the panel but his name has not been confirmed at time of going to print.

A FASCINATING story connected to Oscar Wilde arrives at the Town Hall Theatre next week with Brendan Murphy’s Kicking Oscar’s Corpse. Set against the backdrop of WWI, the play centres on a libel case brought about by the dancer Maud Allan against the right wing British MP Noel Pemberton-Billing in 1918.
