For anyone who wishes to know the rules of the water, Mayo Sailing Club is hosting a lecture entitled The Rules of Racing by Ed Alcock on Thursday February 23 at 7.30pm in the GMIT, Castlebar. It will outline the laws that govern racing on the water. Many boats, big and small, engage in the sport of racing. The Racing Rules of Sailing govern the conduct of yacht racing, dinghy racing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and virtually any other form of racing around a course with more than one vessel while powered by the wind. The forthcoming lecture will cover topics like rights and obligations on the water, giving way, keeping clear, red flags, and protest forms.

THE MILLIONS of euro worth of sailing vessels that comprise the competing boats in the Volvo Ocean Race were delicately loaded onto ships in the Indian Ocean yesterday in a bid to prevent violent pirates from learning the route and attacking the valuable vessels as they edge slowly closer to the finishing line in Galway next summer.

New response vessel for Killala Coast Guard crew

The Irish Coast Guard crew in Killala are to receive a new response craft as part of the Coast Guard’s RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) replacement programme. The news has been welcomed by Minister of State Michael Ring.

Kayak around Ireland for Hospice

During the last week of May a GMIT student and his kayaking buddy will be departing Howth to paddle around Ireland by sea kayak (1,600km). The expedition is being carried out in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation, a charity working to improve end of life care in Irish hospitals. During the trip they will be carrying all their camping, cooking, and safety equipment, and a week’s worth of food at a time in their kayaks. They hope to be finished the trip in five to six weeks while paddling for six to 10 hours a day.
