A summer of drama and excitement starts here

This weekend 42 of the 43 teams taking part in the Mayo Football league will kick off their campaign for the new season. The odd team out being Ballyvary Blue Bombers who are part of the seven team League One this season. The big change this year in the league format is the return to 10 team divisions in the top three levels this season after a couple of years with eight team divisions.

Next Friday night (December 6) in the Welcome Inn Hotel the Mayo League will honour the best performers of the year at its annual awards night. The league has selected teams of the year across all five divisions of the Mayo League, from the Super League to League Two, and team of the year for the Masters competitions it runs. It will also announce on the night the player of the year in each division.

€329,000 in funding for footpath and pavement works in the county

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has confirmed that his Department has allocated €329,525 in funding to Mayo County Council for pavement and footpath works in a number of areas in the county.

Kenny launches go-kart pedalathon for Western Care

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny launched the first go-kart pedalathon in the west of Ireland last Saturday, August 4. On Saturday September 29 a relay of Mayo celebrities, sports persons, politicians, and others will take part in the first pedal go-kart pedalathon to be held in the west of Ireland. The event involves a sponsored go-kart pedal between Swinford and Castlebar in aid of Western Care Association.

Double the Mayo interest in this year’s Rás

This year will see two Mayo based teams taking part in the An Post Rás for the first time. Castlebar Cycling Club first entered a team in the big race in 2009 and has competed in three instalments of the race since, and will be once again on the start line when the race gets under way on Sunday. This years Rás team is made up of brothers Patrick and Ciaran Clarke alongside Bernard Twomeny, Chris Coyle, and David Brennan.

Roache leads the way after four rounds

After four rounds of the Mayo cycling league Swinford man Kevin Roache has now scored more points in the four races to date than the other 87 starters, he wears the Marrey Bikes sponsored yellow jersey of league leader.

Ninety seven tonnes of electrical waste collected in Mayo

WEEE Ireland held a series of WEEE Wagon collections throughout Mayo during March and April, supported by Mayo County Council. These smaller collection days allowed people from towns and villages across the county to get rid of any household electrical equipment and batteries in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
