Due to the closing of six Garda stations in Mayo at the end of the month there will be new policing changes imposed from January 30. The six stations to close in Mayo as approved by the Minister for Justice and Equality are: Blacksod, Ballycastle, Ballyglass, Ballyvary, Hollymount and Lahardane.

The news that six Garda stations in Mayo were included in a rash of closures across the country has been greeted with derision by politicians from the opposition parties in the county. The news was announced on Wednesday afternoon when most eyes were on the announcement of the Budget in the Dáil.

The monthly winners of the Mayo League awards for May were announced this week. And unsurprisingly, Westport United were the big winners of three awards, including club of the month. The Covies picked up their first Connacht Junior Cup in 25 years during May with a historic win over Athenry 4-2 on penalties. They have also had a 100 per cent start in the Elverys Sports Super League this year and have 18 points from their first six games and are currently well out in front of the pack.
