Decision making on roads programme for 2010 questioned

Ballinrobe Musical Society, who perform the world amateur premiere of the story of Mayo’s own Granuaile next February, have announced a major sponsorship deal with Irish Pride. Irish Pride, one of the country’s leading bread brands, has a long and proud association with Ballinrobe, as the company is a major employer in the region thanks to their local bakery on the town’s Abbey Street.

The draft development plans for both Ballyhaunis and Ballinrobe were passed by the elected members of the Claremorris electoral area committee this week. The members considered the manager’s report on the submissions made by the public and other bodies to the original draft plan which was published earlier this year.

The councillors from the old Ballinrobe electoral area welcomed the news that the tender process will be concluded shortly for the new Bowers Walk bridge project in the town. The old electoral area had directed money from the economic and social fund towards the project.

The members of the Claremorris electoral area committee were told that it was the Department of the Environment which was holding up improvement works on the cemetery in Ballinrobe, rather than the council’s heritage officer. Seamus Granhan, director of services for Mayo County Council, was responding to a notice of motion put forward by Fianna Fáil Councillor Damien Ryan which asked the county manager “to intervene in relation to the ongoing hold up in the Ballinrobe cemetery and improvement works which are currently at a standstill due an intervention by the heritage officer”.
