Tests of Mayo broadband speeds ranks wireless provider Imagine as delivering faster speeds than many fibre providers

Ranking of broadband speeds in Mayo released by independent measurement expert, Ookla Speedtest “demonstrate the fundamental importance of wireless internet connectivity to counties like Mayo”, leading internet provider Imagine said recently. The Ookla Speedtest results 2016 measured the speed performance of all internet service providers (ISP) servicing the Irish market. The results were calculated by measuring and aggregating the performance of ISPs as reported by users, with the top five providers ranked and named.

BT Ireland confirmed financial grants of €5,400 to Galway secondary schools that participated in this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, one of the world’s largest and longest-running school STEM showcases. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to providing travel and accommodation grants for schools taking part in the 2017 exhibition, which closes for entries on September 28.

Fastcom to offer broadband services to 23k homes and business in Mayo

Fastcom, the Sligo-based telecommunications company, recently announced it had signed an open access agreement with open eir, the wholesale division of eir. The deal gives Fastcom access to 135,000 premises in Ireland’s west and northwest – including more than 23,200 homes and businesses in Mayo – allowing it to help make the area one of the best-served rural regions in Ireland.

Grants available for BT Young Scientist travel and accommodation

The BT Travel and Accommodation Grant Scheme, created for students taking part in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, has provided financial aid totalling more than €300,000 through 834 grants to 335 schools across Ireland in the past seven years, of which schools in Mayo have received in excess of €10,000. Increased in 2012 to €75,000 per year, the BT grant is opening up the competition to a wider number of young people.

Mayo students were amongst those from secondary schools throughout Ireland who took the opportunity to reflect on their education and hopes for their future.
