Numerous tributes were paid to outgoing Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Austin Francis O’Malley, at the May monthly meeting of the local authority. The Louisburgh based councillor brought a meeting of the local authority to his heartland for the first time in history this week. The meeting was held in the Ocean Lodge, in the village of Killadoon just outside Louisburgh, where one councillor joked before the meeting as he looked out on the Atlantic Ocean, “next stop is the Statue of Liberty”. Padraic McNamara, chairperson of the Killadoon Community Council, welcomed the 31 members of the council and the officials to the area at the start of the meeting.

The third village design statement for the county, that of the Mulranny Village Design Statement, was launched on Monday in the village by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who said the design statement will enable Mulranny to become the “number one” village in the country.

Independent councillor Frank Durcan cast aspersions on An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and an a family in-law at this week’s Mayo County Council meeting as he addressed the chamber in regard to his ongoing row with Mayo County Council officials over planning issues. The February meeting of the council had to be adjourned after Cllr Durcan refused to back down on allegations he made in the chamber. There were fears that the March meeting of the council would descend into similar disarray. However when Cllr Durcan tried to raise the issue of the previous month’s meeting under the adoption of minutes, he was quickly shut down by Cathaoirleach, Cllr Austin Francis O’Malley, who informed the councillor there were no matters arising from the minutes on the agenda, so he would be moving the meeting forward.

Custom House Studios and the Creel Restaurant Westport Quay host a reading of “Like a Marble Rolled”, a contemporary epic poem written and performed by artist/poet Phoebe Dick, on Thursday January 26, at 8.30pm at The Creel Restaurant, Westport Quay. Custom House Studios later this month will host an exhibition of artworks from Carrowbeg Enterprises Art Project. The exhibition will be opened by Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Cllr Austin Francis O’Malley on Thursday, January 26 at 7.30pm. The exhibition will include works by six participants who have been engaged in an ongoing printmaking and fine art workshop over the past six months under the guidance of Grainne O’Reilly and Caroline Masterson. The participants are Trish Kelly, Peggy Kierney, Anna Rose Lowery, Marie Maguire, Gerry O’Malley and Martina Walsh.

A CPO in relation to works on the N59 Westport to Mulranny road is, according to director of services for the Westport area Joe Beirne, ready to be published. Tony McNulty from the roads design office also added that if the opportunity is lost by not publishing the CPO, “then we don’t know when the opportunity will present itself again”.

A war of words erupted at the November meeting of Mayo County Council over the decision by the Government to close the Vatican embassy. Independent councillor Frank Durcan said: “I’m ashamed to be from Castlebar and that a Castlebar man had the final say in closing it. It’s a shame.”

Westport area councillor John O’Malley has condemned the lack of works done on Glenhest roads, which “are in a terrible state” with potholes. During Monday’s electoral area meeting Cllr O’Malley commented that the whole Glenhest area seems to be “completely ignored”.

Mayo County Council has welcomed the announcement by Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ring, of an investment of €1.8m in tourism infrastructure in the county. The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Austin Francis O'Malley, said: “This investment is most welcome and will link the Great Western Greenway with Castlebar and will spread the benefits of this most successful project.”
