Mayo hoteliers attend launch of Tourism Ireland’s marketing plans

A number of Mayo hoteliers and tourism enterprises attended the launch of Tourism Ireland’s marketing plans to promote Ireland overseas in 2014 and beyond, at an event attended by Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar. The event took place in the Ballsbridge Hotel in Dublin and was attended by Mayo tourism enterprises – including the Westport Woods Hotel, Ashford Castle and the Downhill House Hotel. Tourism Ireland aims to build on this year’s growth in overseas tourism and to welcome 25.6 million visitors to the island over the coming three years – contributing some €12.6 billion to the economies, north and south.

One hundred and sixty jobs have been maintained in the west as Ashford Castle, Cong, was sold this week following a global marketing process by joint receivers Ernst & Young and selling agent Savills. The new owner, Red Carnation Hotels, has exchanged contracts on the historic five star property and plans to operate the hotel as a leading branded hotel.

An economuseeis an artisan business that opens its doors to the public to provide a learning and interpretive experience for visitors.

No quiet men at the Ashford Duathlon

Beautiful weather, stunning scenery and a formidable challenge greeted participants at last week’s Ashford Duathlon in Cong, Co Mayo. The event, which included a 5km run, 20 km cycle and final 2km run, took place amid stunning scenery in and around the Ashford Castle estate. Almost 200 participants from top class athletes to complete novices travelled from across the country to race on a course which skirted Lough Corrib, Ashford Castle, Cong Woods and Cong Abbey. The winner, Martin Grealish, put on a masterclass of racing with a time of 55.31, over four minutes clear of second placed Art Naughton. The ladies’ race was won by Anne Marie Egan in a time of 67.30.
