A Mayo based animal rights group, People Against Cruelty to Animals (PACA) is planning a protest outside the Mayo County Council offices in Castlebar on Monday May 9 at 3pm. The protest will coincide with the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council. The group intends to highlight the practice of animal testing at the Charles Rivers laboratories, Bellagelly South, Glenamoy, Ballina. The group has contacted all 30 county councillors and the board members of Mayo County Council via email asking to have the licence for the premises revoked.

The number of stray and unwanted dogs seized by Mayo County Council increased sharply in 2014, according to the latest figures on dog control released by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.

Local dog rescue group MADRA saved 474 dogs from pounds in 2014 - representing eight per cent of all dogs transferred to rescue organisations across the country.

An appeal by Galway based dog rescue and adoption group MADRA for €10,000 in funding from Galway City Council has got a positive reaction from councillors. The local authority is also to investigate the possibility of giving further financial aid to the organisation in the years ahead.

In Galway. That’s just one month. If you look at the picture again and double it, what you will see is the approximate number of dogs that are put to sleep in our city pound each year. Funded by ourselves. A sad indictment that so many animals abandoned through no fault of their own have to be killed, no matter how humanely the process is described or how Disneyified the ‘put to sleep” scenario sounds. Bottom line is Fido doesn’t wake up.
