St Michael’s are on the verge of regaining senior status. Next weekend’s County Intermediate Championship decider with Glenamaddy carries all the hallmarks of a defining afternoon for the city club.

St Michael's are back. In a hugely entertaining Claregalway Hotel Galway IFC Final, the city side regained their senior status by virtue of a hard-earned yet thoroughly merited one-point victory over Glenamaddy. After an absence of 18 years, St. Michael's return to the top flight and should they bring the sparkling football they displayed at the business end of this year's championship into next season, they look set for an extended stay there.

Last Monday morning I had to drive to Dublin for an early appointment in the “Big Smoke”. At just after 5am I passed the St Michael’s local hostelry in Bushy Park in Galway city.

A short lull in the Gaelic football calendar comes to an end next weekend when the serious business of the Connacht club championship begins for St Michael's. Next Sunday's provincial semi-final in Cloone pits the recently crowned Galway intermediate champions against Leitrim's Aughnasheelin.

St Michael’s are on their travels again this Sunday when they face Kilbride at 12.45pm in Hyde Park in the Intermediate Connacht club football final.

St Michael’s GAA club was formed in 1956, and they have had some proud days in the past 52 years. However, few, if any, would have surpassed their achievement last Sunday when they collected their first provincial title in great style.

Pat Regan's team have been playing an exciting, dynamic brand of football with a real emphasis on kick passing and moving the ball at speed. They were hugely enjoyable to watch last season and all Galway supporters will wish them well this weekend in their quest to reach the All-Ireland final.
