Disruption to pedestrian access at canal

As part of the construction work for the Mullingar Sewerage Improvement Scheme, it will be necessary to close off all pedestrian access in the area around the existing underpass at Springfield linking onto Friars Mill, Mullingar. This closure will be effective from February 2.

Pedestrian access along the Royal Canal towpaths has also been removed from January 19. This closure will allow for the construction of pipelines for the Mullingar Sewerage Interceptor Scheme and will result in the provision of a new upgraded pedestrian underpass, as well as the construction of a new culvert to allow for the diversion of the River Brosna.

This will have implications for the residents of Springfield Gardens, Springfield Cottages and Ginnell Terrace as well as for residents of Friars Mill Court who use the pedestrian underpass on a regular basis. Until the construction works are completed, all pedestrians are asked to use the existing footpaths running along the public road, and the existing road bridge at the Delvin Road/Old Dublin Road junction as the means to cross the canal.

It is anticipated that the works will take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Westmeath County Council regrets any inconvenience caused and would ask the public for their co-operation for the duration of the construction work.
