Let’s make Mullingar “the Westport of the Midlands”

Mullingar is to work towards the gold standard for night time destinations, the ‘Purple Flag’, in a bid to make it “the Westport of the Midlands”.

The council revealed plans this week to earn Purple Flag Status for Mullingar - an evening and night-time accreditation which highlights quality in shopping, dining, pubs, and entertainment.

The award indicates that towns are “clean, safe, vibrant, and convivial”

Director of services David Hogan says the Purple Flag would identify Mullingar as a “destination of choice”.

“It says that a town has reached a certain level of safety between 5pm and 5am, that people can come in and socialise. It says that a town has a positive attitude and is vibrant, with a mix of entertainment and activities,” he explained to councillors at Monday’s Mullingar Municipal District meeting.

The council is engaging with the Mullingar Town Team to develop a submission for the Purple Flag award. The submission is due by early October, with an awards ceremony planned for January 2015 in Galway.
