“Great honour” for Mullingar’s new mayor

Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Ken Glynn is the first mayor of the Mullingar Municipal District, under the revamped local government structure. He was elected unopposed after being proposed by Cllr Paul Daly for the position.

Speaking after his appointment, Cllr Glynn described his appointment as “a great honour”.

“I am 15 years on Mullingar Town Council, and my only regret in political life is that I never had the opportunity to chair that body.

“I will work with you and for you to ensure that we work in a positive fashion for the betterment of people,” he assured councillors.

Among the projects Cllr Glynn wishes to see prioritised during his time is the establishment of a military museum in the town.

Congratulating the new mayor, Cllr Daly said he hoped rural areas would not be forgotten, but that he “felt it was important that the first [mayor] would be a true blue Mullingar man, and you fit the bill”.

“It is a historic occasion for you and your family; there is a strong history of public representation in your family,” he added.

Cllr Glynn was joined in the chamber by his wife, two children, and his father Camillus Glynn, a former senator and councillor.

Fellow Fianna Fáil councillor John Shaw was elected deputy mayor.
