Castlepollard gears up for St Patrick’s Day

Last weekend in Castlepollard both churches were uplit in green in anticipation of this weekend’s St Partick’s celebrations.

This year’s St Patrick’s Day parade in north Westmeath is going to be the biggest yet, filled with bands, floats, and fantastic entries from all the local clubs, schools, and organisations and of course the man himself, St Patrick!

The theme for the parade is ‘Legends’ and there will be entertainment, music, dancing, and a funfair in the Square from 2pm. The parade itself will begin at 5pm, there will be the Mullingar Town Band and a brass band as well as all local schools, clubs, organisations, and businesses taking part.

Leading out the parade as chief marshal will be the winner of the north Westmeath Rose title and the runners up will be parade ambassadors on the day. The north Westmeath Rose of Tralee competition is being held in the Hotel Castlepollard on March 15 and 16.

The fundraising plans for St Patrick’s Day have been turned into a St Patrick’s festival of sorts in Castlepollard, with many fun events being held across the town in the run-up to the big day to help cover the cost of the parade.

There are hampers made up by Angela Montgomery and Comiskey’s are raffling a TV. There is a St Patrick’s Day walk being organised by McCormacks, a Come Dine with Me evening is being organised by Farrellys and a poker night in the Woolpack. A pig roast has been organised for March 16 at the Town and Country and the St Patrick’s Day parade committee are also selling balloons for a balloon release on the day with all funds raised being contributed to a Motor Neurone Disease charity.

“It is going to be another wonderful day for north Westmeath and we look forward to seeing everyone coming into Castlepollard for a fun day for all the family,” said Sean Montgomery, parade committee.
