Tag rugby tournament returns to Mullingar soon

One of the biggest social events experienced in recent years in the Midlands is set to shine for a fourth summer with the return of the mixed tag rugby tournament to Mullingar RFC.

The tournament will be launched at 7pm on Thursday April 26, followed by a first practice session.

Registration and additional practice will be held on the next two Thursdays, with the tournament proper opening on May 10.

The game of tag rugby really lends itself to anyone of average fitness and competitiveness who has liked the look of rugby but may have been put off by the physicality of it.

The tournament will be held over 10 weeks across the summer, and is a great way of keeping fit and meeting new people.

There will be three different leagues which will cater for all levels of experience, skill, and fitness so everyone is welcome.

Tag is a non-contact version of the game played by mixed gender teams, and gets its name from the velcro tags each player wears around his or her waist, the removal off which signifies a tackle and a stop in play, with a rugby league roll-back re-start.

The beauty of the game is its trick of inclusivity, and it achieves this by making a female try worth three times the value of a male score.

Throughout the summer there will also be a number of themed social nights incorporated into the tournament, including the European Soccer Championship, a fancy dress night, a tug-of-war, and the end-of-season Mad Hatters barbecue.

The Tag committee are calling on all past teams, people interested in entering a team, or people interested in joining a team to contact them as soon as possible.

Information and registration can be got from Dave Farrelly on (086 )2546083 or Robert Gunn on (085 )7825963.
