Funeral of local crash victim takes place today

The funeral is to take place today [Friday] of the 19-year-old victim of a road traffic collision which occurred outside Delvin on Tuesday this week.

Andrew Geoghegan of Ellenstown, Delvin, died after the van in which he was travelling was involved in a head-on collision with a car on the N51 between Delvin and Athboy, at approximately 3.20pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Geoghegan was the sole occupant of the small van. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

One of the two people travelling in the other car was treated in hospital for injuries which were described as not life-threatening.

The road was closed for a time on Wednesday afternoon for examination by Garda forensic collision investigators, and local diversions were put in place.

Gardai are seeking any witnesses to the incident. Anyone with any information which may be of assistance is asked to contact Mullingar Gardai at (044 ) 9384000.

A funeral Mass for Mr Geoghegan will take place in the Church of the Assumption, Delvin at noon today, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
