Pensioner in court over sexual assault

A 70-year-old man has appeared before Mullingar District Court, charged with sexually assaulting a woman.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons is alleged to have committed the assault at a Westmeath address in January of this year.

He was arrested this morning [August 9] and brought before the court by Garda Peter Kelly who said the pensioner made no reply when charged.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case may be heard in the District Court if he pleads guilty but otherwise he will be sent forward for trial to the Circuit Court.

Judge Patrick McMahon remanded him on bail to appear before the court again next month.
