Westmeath students receive Texaco art prizes

Seven Westmeath students were among the 161 winners from all over Ireland who travelled to Dublin recently to receive their prizes in this year’s 56th Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

Fourteen-year-old Deirdre Manny, a student at St Joseph’s Secondary School, Rochfortbridge won first prize of €450 in category G of the competition for her entry entitled ‘Still Life’.

Other Westmeath winners were Clare Lynch (Loreto College, Mullingar ), Gabija Vilkelyte (Presentation Senior School, Mullingar ), Niamh Nolan (St Colman's National School, Mullingar ) and Lonan-Francis Manny - brother of Deirdre Manny (St Tola's National School, Hiskinstown, Delvin ), who all won Special Merit awards.

Two Athlone students took home top awards, Daniel Henry (age five ) from St. Joseph’s Primary School won second prize (€125 ) in the ‘six years and under’ age category for his work entitled ‘Watermelon Delight’, while Sean McBrearty (Marist College, Athlone ) received a Special Merit award for his work entitled ‘Cheese and Wine’.

Their prizes were presented by Minister of State for Children and Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews TD and Enda Riney, Chairman, Chevron Ireland Limited.
