EirGrid to spend €310m in Midlands region as part of Grid25

EirGrid, the operator of the national grid, will brief major stakeholders in Mullingar on their planned €310 million investment in electricity infrastructure in the Midlands region. This investment is part of the Grid25 strategy. The speaker on the day will be manager of Grid implementation, Aidan Corcoran. The event will be held in the Mullingar Park Hotel on Tuesday November 24 at 8am.

Grid25 is a major initiative to put in place a safe, secure and affordable electricity supply throughout Ireland, supporting economic growth and utilising our renewable energy resource to its maximum potential.

Upon completion, Grid25 will provide a strong platform for renewed economic growth in the Midlands region as well as jobs in construction and opportunities for other high quality employment downstream. It will also help to ensure that the Midlands region has access to reliable and high quality power supplies. It will also facilitate the region’s access to Ireland’s abundant renewable resources, with benefits for security of supply and sustainability, and enable the region to become a net exporter of renewable energy.

Grid25 will involve doubling the capacity of the national bulk transmission grid by 2025. This will be achieved through a combination of upgrading the existing network and the construction of new transmission infrastructure, in a manner that balances cost, reliability and environmental impact. The implementation of the strategy will be characterised by the use of best practice and innovative new technologies. The strategy involves an investment of €4 billion in essential infrastructure over the next 16 years in the period to 2025.
