Life-saving water rings in jeopardy

A new website, www.ringbuoys.ie has been launched by Irish Water Safety to help local authorities speedily identify missing and damaged ringbuoys. A total of 300 ringbuoys are located near water in various parts of Mayo but between 30 and 40 of these are damaged or go missing each year.

Flood relief of €128,700 from the OPW has been allocated to Mayo. The Owenwee River, Westport receives a total of €52,200; Dookinelly, Achill Island, gets €45,000 to provide an open drain to the sea as well as roadside drainage while Derryguillinan, Cloghans gets €31,500 for relief works.

A pioneering Mayo-based surgeon — who was the first specialist in the world outside the United States to undertake a revolutionary new hip replacement — offered hundreds of colleagues a live insight into the technique. A live satellite link took place on Wednesday (May 26) between the orthopaedic unit at Mayo General Hospital and one of the world’s premier international joint replacement conferences in Rome. The broadcast allowed orthopaedic expert Mr Derek Bennett to demonstrate the technique and components which make the breakthrough operation so successful.
