Mayo psoriasis sufferers urged to establish support group

The Psoriasis Association of Ireland has urged psoriasis sufferers throughout Mayo to set up a local support group. National committee member Ronan Farrelly said many people who have the skin disease suffer in silence and prefer not to discuss their condition. In many cases people avoid social situations like going to the shops, attending parties, participating in sporting or community events, he said.

Psoriasis is a chronic incurable skin disease, characterised by dry, red, patches and thick silvery scales on the skin that are extremely itchy, leading to scratching and bleeding. It can be extremely painful. “It is very important that people who have the condition seek medical treatment from their doctor or dermatologist as there are excellent treatments available. Many people withdraw from taking an active part in their local community because they feel stigmatised. A local support group would provide a focal point for people to meet others with the same condition and enable them to discuss their conditions. The Psoriasis Association will assist anybody who wants to set up a support group and will attend initial meetings to help get them off the ground,” said Mr Farrelly.
