Mayo engineering firm lands national award for Belmullet renewable energy project

An innovative renewable energy contract in Belmullet has secured a major national award for a Mayo-based mechanical and electrical engineering contracting firm. Sean Horan Ltd, founded 40 years ago, has just been awarded the Plumbing & Heating Magazine renewable project of the year award for 2017.

The award, sponsored by Worcester Bosch, was presented in recognition of a retrofit project completed at the Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA ) premises in Belmullet. It specifically honoured the manner in which the use of renewable technology has enhanced the energy efficiency and sustainability of the project.

The project which was undertaken as part of the SEAI Better Energy Communities scheme led by Mayo County Council, in partnership with Údaras na Gaeltachta, involved Sean Horan Ltd completing a Photovoltic (PV ) Installation. It included the supply, installation and commissioning of a ground-mounted, grid-connected 11kW solar PV array, interconnected to the building’s 3-phase power supply. Photovoltic (PV ) energy is the direct conversion of sunlight into electricity.

Founder Sean Horan, and his son Michael, accepted the award from the sponsors Worcester Bosch representative Ray McClay at a gala ceremony sponsored by Calor Gas and hosted by Plumbing and Heating magazine in The Mansion House, Dublin, last week. “We are delighted with this award, it recognises the many ways in which we have diversified business and expanded our areas of operation over the years,” said Michael Horan.

“It is particularly gratifying to be recognised as having delivered the best renewable project in Ireland in our category in 2017. We are proud of the manner in which we have adapted to the many changes in technology. As trends change, companies like us must innovate, if we are to survive and thrive.”
