What we learned from Mayo's win over Roscommon

GAA: FBD League

Mayo wrappeded up their FBD League run for 2017 with a remarkable win over Roscommon on Sunday, we look back on a that win and pick out a few talking points. You can read our match report at http://www.advertiser.ie/mayo/article/89983/moran-seals-miracle-ending-for-mayo

Andy is the man

When Andy Moran came off the bench on Sunday, he was probably the only man, woman or child in Kiltoom that would have put money on him hitting the back of the net twice injury time to seal a win for Mayo. Moran's positivity is a brilliant trait and he showed that along with a cool head and a deadly steal to fire in his second goal right at the death to win the game.

Second half slump

Mayo and Roscommon went toe to toe in the first half with Mayo going in leading by a single point at the break 1-9 to 1-8, but Mayo switched off early in the second half and Roscommon were able to build up a deserved lead 2-16 to 1-11 lead with not long left, with Mayo's two second half points up to that stage coming from Cillian O'Connor frees.

Coen shows leadership

While Andy Moran will grab the headlines for his two goal salvo at the end, in the lead up to his final goal Stephen Coen showed great leadership and composure to strip the ball out of Kevin Higgins' possession twice out near the sideline. It could have been easy for Coen to foul Higgins or give up the ghost after winning the ball back the first time only for it to lost a few seconds later. But he stuck to what he knows and won the ball back again at a vital stage.

Midfield duo show their worth

Jason Gibbons would have been a key man for Mayo last year only for a shoulder injury in Mayo's game with Galway back in June to rule him out of the rest of the season. But on Sunday Gibbons and Danny Kirby put in a very impressive shift as a unit especially in the first half where both men were dominant. Throw in a brilliant Kirby point from out on the far touch line six minutes in and Gibbons driving forward to be fouled for the penalty that brought Mayo back into contention and it was a very decent afternoon for the pair.

Business time coming up

There's two weeks to go before the start of the National League against Monaghan in Castlebar, so Stephen Rochford will be looking at making a decision on a few of the players who he's given game time to over the past few weeks. The likes of Fergal Boland, Danny Kirby and Michael Plunkett have all put their hands up, while Donie Newcombe and Liam Irwin have also shown flashes of what they can offer.
