Achill Wheelers launch Tour de Achill

The second annual Achill Wheelers Tour de Achill was launched on Keel beach recently with this September’s cycle to include three routes around the parish.The expanded Tour de Achill will take place on Saturday September 10 and is hosted by Achill Wheelers Cycling Club and follows the success of their inaugural cycle last year.

The three route options on the day will cater for cyclists of all levels and this year there will be an additional route option with a new 110k route included in the cycle. The other routes include a 65k and a 38k cycle which will take in some of the most breathtaking scenery around the parish of Achill. All of the cycles will start at Halla Acla in Achill Sound at 10am and cyclists will make their way across the Michael Davitt Bridge and around the Currane Peninsula and back onto the island.

The 38k cycle will be completed on the return to Halla Acla while those taking the 110k and 65k options will continue along the stunning Atlantic Drive. After completing the Atlantic Drive, the 65k cyclists will return towards the finish in Halla Acla while the 110k cyclists will head towards Dooagh.

After a food stop in Dooagh, cyclists will then travel around the historic Deserted Village and make their way past the Silver and Golden strands in Dugort with their stunning views over Blacksod Bay. The cyclists will then make their way through Bunnacurry before cycling out towards Achill Sound and the finish. The Achill Wheelers Cycling Club has promised cyclists there will be plenty of refreshments to refuel along the way and there will be food at the finish in Halla Acla.
