Kilmovee lecture series lines up some engaging events

The spring lecture series continues in the Thatch Cottage, Kilmovee, with the next lecture taking place on Monday night, February 29. The title of the talk will be 'The Placenames of County Mayo' and it will be delivered by Dr Fiachra MacGabhann.

Dr Mac Gabhann, formerly of Queens University Belfast and NUIG and now working in Castlebar College of Further Education, has published widely on linguistic and folkloric matters, including his 10-volume Logainmneacha Mhaigh Eo work on Mayo placenames which was launched in 2014.

The series will continue on Wednesday April 6 when a lecture titled 'The Medicinal Uses and Folklore of Bog Plants' will be delivered by Lorna Elms, National Museum of Country Life's education officer. This lecture promises to be a great lecture and you are guaranteed never to look at the bog in the same way again.

On Wednesday May 4 Frank Sholdice will deliver a lecture called Grandpa the Sniper, where you will hear how two Ballaghaderreen brothers took on the British Army for six days at North King Street, scene of some of the fiercest fighting through the 1916 Easter Rising, and in punishment were sent to Dartmoor Prison and Frongoch internment camp. Doors open for all lectures at 7.30pm and all lectures start at 8pm sharp. Admission is €5 or €3 with concessions. Refreshments served.
