The GAA community and wider community in Mayo were in mourning this week following the death of the talented 19-year-old Darragh Doherty who lost his life in a road traffic collision on Sunday night. Doherty from Ballyhenry in Kilmaine was killed in a single vehicle traffic collision at Carromore, near Ballinrobe on Sunday night.
Doherty was a member of the Mayo All Ireland winning minor football team in 2013, scoring 1-2 in Mayo's win over Tyrone in Croke Park that day. Darragh was laid to rest after Requiem Mass yesterday afternoon in St Patrick's Church, Kilmaine, in Kilmaine new cemetery. In a statement Kilmaine GAA Club said: "Darragh was a winner, a leader, expecting the high standards of all those around him, that he delivered himself. Kilmaine GAA wishes to extend its sympathies to his parents Margaret and Tom, his brothers, Cathal, Adrian, David and Gerard, and all of his extended family and friends."
Mayo GAA said: "Darragh was an exceptional player who gave 100 per cent while he represented his club and county with pride. We are very privileged to have had someone in the calibre of Darragh to have worn the green and red of Mayo."
Supporters at Sunday's All Ireland semi-final between Mayo and Dublin are being asked to stand up and give a minute's applause in memory of Darragh in the 13th minute of the match, in memory of the talented young footballer who wore the number 13 jersey for Mayo in the 2013 All Ireland final. The idea was proposed earlier this week by former Mayo footballer David Brady and got the full support of both the Mayo and Dublin county boards and the hashtag #13forNo13 trended on Twitter earlier this week.
