A group of teenagers who make up Mayo's youth council - a sort of youth equivalent of the county council - are putting positive mental health on the agenda with an impressive event taking place on the shores of Lough Lannagh in Castlebar this Monday.
Mayo Comhairle na nÓg is hosting a colour run and an outdoor disco with none other than popular iRadio DJ Stephen Cooper on the decks.
Mayo Comhairle na nÓg is inviting all young people across the county to join its members at Lough Lannagh to enjoy the colour, craic, and tunes while at the same time promoting the positive mental health campaign, Let's Go Mental.
Comhairle na nÓg is a children and youth council.
The youth councils exist in each of Ireland's 34 local authority areas to give young people under 18, who do not have a vote, the opportunity to be represented and have their say in policies, services, and issues that effect them in their locality.
The Comhairle na nÓg Let's Go Mental campaign is aimed at promoting positive mental health in young people through music, sport, the arts, and other fun activities.
"The Mayo youth council collectively decided that the best way to do this would be to host an upbeat and original event that everyone could have access to, which is why we have decided to make it free of charge," said a spokesperson for Mayo Comhairle na nÓg. "This event will be sponsored by Mindspace Mayo, a free and confidential support service for young people's mental health and wellbeing."
The event runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Monday July 27, at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, and is completely free of charge.
Organiser recommend those taking part in the colour run wear plain coloured clothes as participants will be splattered with coloured powder paints along the route.
An outdoor disco will follow the colour run.
