Iorras Aontaithe look to take down big guns

Soccer: Connacht Junior Cup

The last Mayo League side standing the Connacht Junior Cup will be looking to take a big scalp when they head to Galway on Sunday afternoon. Iorras Aontaithe will take on Mervue United in the quarter-final stages of the competition and look to do what fellow Super League side Ballyheane were unable to do in the last round, knock out the Galway city outfit. Mervue are currently sitting in second place in the Premier Division in Galway, five points behind leaders Athenry, with one game left to go in the league and are one of five Galway sides to make the last eight of the Connacht Junior Cup.

Iorras Aontaithe booked their place in the last eight with a 3-1 win over fellow Mayo League side Conn Rangers in Carne Nash in the middle of March, with Brendan Nallen, Jason Boylan, and Pete MacArthur getting the goals for the men from Erris.

Since then Iorras Aontaithe have had two games in the Mayo Super League, seeing off Conn Rangers again on the opening day a fortnight ago with a 1-0 win, but their preparations were dealt a big blow last Sunday when Westport United crushed them with ease on a scoreline of 6-0 in the Sportspark. The north Mayo men will have to up their game big time on Sunday if they are to stop the Galway side making the final-four. In their win over Ballyheane in the previous round, Mervue United had Eoin Concannon to thank for the win after he scored both goals in the first half, leaving Ballyheane with too much to do to get back into the game. Last weekend they warmed up for this Sunday’s game with a comprehensive 7-0 win over St Patrick’s in their penultimate league game. The kick-off on Sunday is at 2pm in Mervue.
