Progress on Killala cable project as construction nears

The promoters of a transatlantic fibre-optic communications cable to deliver high speed connectivity between North America and Europe, via a landing point in Killala, are moving closer and closer to starting construction work on the project.

America Europe Connect Ltd. has applied for a foreshore licence application, the last hurdle to be crossed before construction on the sub sea cable can begin.

According to Cllr Jarlath Munnelly (FG ), the project “has the potential to transform north Mayo”.

It will put Killala, Mayo and Ireland at the centre of a global network, he added.

When complete, the cable will provide super high data speeds from the US to Europe.

America Europe Connect Ltd., have also applied for planning perfmission through Mayo County Council for the construction of the landing station in Killala.
