Mayo students shine at national theatre awards

Two schools from Mayo won big at the recent Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards.

Seven transition year students from Ballinrobe Community School, all sporting flame red hairdos, shared the Best Performance in a Supporting Role gong for their portrayal of the seven brothers from the musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

The seven romantic heroes were David Ryan, Sean Birch, Darragh McGovern, Tom Quinn, Liam McHale, Oliver Lydon, and Lewis Thanker.

The students were also chosen to perform on stage during the awards ceremony and entertained the crowds with their rendition of the musical hit ‘Sobbin’ Women’.

Meanwhile, fifth class student Orlaith Hughes, from Burriscara National School, impressed the judges with her writing talent and won the Best Short Scene Script for her piece entitled The Maiden of the Mist. The judges described her writing as “poetic, lyrical and beautiful”.

The Mayo students beat off stiff competition from more than 3,000 entries into the Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards to make the shortlist and go on to win overall awards.

The winners were announced at a special awards show hosted by actor Simon Delaney attended by some 2,000 students, representing 57 schools from across Ireland.

The judging panel for the awards included Harry Potter star Evanna Lynch and Emmy award winning animator Marten Jonmark from Brown Bag Films.
