Farmers need GLAS payment

Mayo IFA chairperson Padraic Joyce is calling on the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, to make a six-month payment to farmers signing up for GLAS in 2015.

As it stands, the Minister has indicated farmers will receive a three-month payment in 2015, but Mr Joyce said this is not sufficient.

“We wanted to see GLAS up and running early this year,” he said. “That hasn’t happened and some farmers have not been in an environmental scheme since REPS 3 ended two years ago. This payment is needed.

“We want the Department to commit to a six-month payment for 2015 and we also want all farmers who apply for GLAS to be given access to the scheme.”
